I’m not walking anything back’: Biden defends comment that Putin can’t stay in power – US politics as it happened

We know that there is no such thing as a guarantee of democracy and that no entity can be considered free. The same applies to Russia.

The events in Ukraine are also a result of the failure of our Ukrainian partners to fulfill their obligations - democratic change, separation of powers and respect for human rights. They're fighting for their independence, which they cannot win against an independent Russia.

In a recent interview with NBC reporter, Joe and local journalist, Megyn Kelly was asked what he thought of the idea of Russian leader Putin being able to stay in power.

Apparently, during an interview with journalist Megyn Kelly on December 7, 2016, President-elect Donald Trump said: "I wanna say something that may be wrong but I hate reading things. And so I'll tell you what happened today. We won the election fair and square."

The record of Trump's words was later confirmed by Kellyanne Conway who said "He did not say that Russia is not meddling in our elections." So perhaps it was just a slip of the tongue by the president-elect as his staff had pointed out earlier this week. However, it is still relevant to note that Trump's words were

On Thursday, July 8, Vice President of America, Joe Biden, made a controversial statement about Russia’s president Vladimir Putin. At a press conference in India, Biden said that “he can’t stay in power for long because his ego is too big and he has to walk everything back”. "He [Putin] doesn’t have the capacity to do that," Biden added.

Explain why a leader should be able to ‘walk back’ any criticism of their performance and what they are supposed to do with the backlash.

It is important to remember that Donald Trump, the President of the United States did not have a strong opinion about Putin’s historical legitimacy. However, after the hack on Democratic National Committee (DNC) by Russians, he and his administration came under scrutiny for their alleged ties with Russia.

About a week after the hack attack was brought up by media, Vice President Joe Biden said of him in an interview: “Can he stay in power? Yes. He can’t walk away from democracy and walk back into it." This is a very interesting quote as it shows how far we have come from the days when governments were not allowed to question the validity of their leader.

On Monday, during an interview at the White House where he was asked about the Ukraine crisis, Vice President Joe Biden said that he "didn't walk anything back" when he referred to Vladimir Putin as someone who couldn't "keep Russia in power."

He said it was important to focus on "the future and not an old Cold War mentality."

Biden's comment was made after Putin had released a video where he urged Russia to retaliate against Ukraine. At the time, Biden was asked whether this would be a good or bad thing:

"The people in Putin’s regime are not going to go gently into the night."

President Obama has defended his controversial comments that Putin cannot stay in power. The Russian leader has been accused of involvement in the 2014 shooting down of Malaysia Airways flight MH17 over Ukraine, a crime for which he is not charged by the US and Europol.

In an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, Obama said "I believe that President Putin is a country that's run by autocrats" who have "a history of trying to undermine our democracy and our sovereignty". He said "I have got to make sure that we're not in some permanent state where America is going to protect Europe against Russia, if Russia does bad things."
